Botswana Travel Information

I usually refer to this page as the "Mini Botswana Travel Information Guide"...

On this page i am going to reveal several travel tips that are sure to come handy when you visit.

Lets get right onto it!...

Health Tips

  • Malaria
Northern Botswana is considered to be a malaria zone. But do not let that deter you from visiting my lovely country. All you need to do is take a few precautions and you are guaranteed to be "malaria free" during and after your visit. Check out my malaria precautions below...

    1. Take mosquito prophylactics before visiting. Consult your doctor for more information on this.

    2. Wear long sleeved tops and either trousers or long skirts in the evenings (anything that will cover your skin will do).

    3. Stock up on mosquito repellents. They are cheap and effective so you really have no excuse not to use them.

    4. Do not leave your tent or hotel room open. Close all doors and windows to avoid entry of mosquitoes.

Most lodges and hotels in the Chobe and Okavango region (where mosquitoes are abundant during the rainy season) have mosquito nets in the rooms.

This is an extra precaution to ensure that you not only avoid getting malaria but also get a peaceful sleep ;-)...

  • Skin Care
Temperatures in summer can be as high as 36 degree Celsius(96.8 degree Fahrenheit). It is advisable to bring along with you sunscreen lotion with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 or more.

Large brimmed hats can also help protect your face on sunny days.

  • Water
The tap water in Botswana is safe to drink, however if you are visiting the Chobe and Okavango areas i would recommend you drink bottled water.

Even though the water is drinkable in these regions, it may irritate people that have "sensitive systems".

Bottled mineral water is supplied in all the lodges and shops as well as in service stations.

Customs Advice

There are some personal goods that are duty free when declared on arrival. These include...

  • Two litres of Wine
  • One litre of spirits
  • 200 cigarettes
  • 20 cigars
  • 250 grams of cigarette or pipe tobacco
  • 250 milli litres of eadu de toilette (fragrance)
  • 50 milli litres of perfume

Remember that all goods acquired outside Botswana must be declared when you arrive.
