Francistown Botswana

Francistown Botswana, where i was born and raised..! I love my hometown and it is through this page that i will share with you all my city has to offer.

Francistown is oldest town in Botswana and is considered by many as the capital of Northern Botswana.

It is conveniently placed as a stop over City between the Southern part of Botswana and the major safari destinations(Okavango , Maun, Kasane, Moremi Game Reserve...to name a few) found in the Northern part of Botswana.

However as the second largest city in Botswana it has much more to offer...

  • Luxury Hotels , conference centers, campsites and lodges

  • A number of shopping malls

  • An Airport

  • Car rental facilities

  • Travel agents

  • A museum that showcases the history of the city and its people

  • More than seven Banks, ATMS and a handful of bereau de change you can use exchange your foreign currency

  • Tachila Nature Reserve

  • Shashe dam - You can go fishing there

  • Ntimbale dam - This dam is also a great place for fishing

  • Nyangabgwe Hill - The hill offers great views of Francistown. Apparently there is an ancient wall that dates back centuries ago half way up the hill. Nyangabgwe is also the traditional name of Francistown.

  • Birds and Game - This an animal orphanage for injured animals and birds operated by Uncharted Safaris.

Even though the animals and birds are released back into the wild when they heal, it’s still worth checking out. However, keep in mind that you may not see anything because it all depends if they have any injured animals when you visit.

and so much more...

The Central Park and Independence Tree

The Francistown central park is also a great place to visit when you are in Francistown.

The photo below shows a Baobab tree (the independence tree) in the park that was planted in 1966 to mark the independence of Botswana. The tree was planted by Mrs Kathleen Mincher who was Francistowns's first mayor.

There are also some interesting cultural displays at the park you might like. These include traditional huts, wooden statues and metal crafts.

Francistown Botswana Walking Tours

If you really want to learn about Francistown, its history and get the chance to interact with the locals and also get to eat "real" local cuisine, then you might want to go on the walking tours of Francistown offered by the Supa Ngwao Museum.

Domboshaba Ruins

You can also visit the Domboshaba Ruins which are located about 80 kilometers from the city. These ruins show ancient culture of the Bakalanga people of Botswana.
