Nata Sanctuary

Nata Sanctuary is located at the mouth of the Nata River 20 km south of the village of Nata.

The idea of a sanctuary came about as a conservation project by the Nata Conservation Committee in 1988.

The Sanctuary was eventually formed four years later With help from the Kalahari conservation Society and other local and international organizations.

It covers about 230 square kilometers of which 55% is land surface and 45% is pan surface.

Today it is a haven for the large number of wildlife and birds found in the Sua Pan region.

Attractions and Activities

I am not much of a bird watching enthusiast...if you are then you are going to love the abundant bird life the Sanctuary offers.

It is said that about 165 species of birds have been recorded.

Among these are:

  • Greater and Lesser Flamingos
  • Pelicans
  • Eagles
  • Geese
  • Teals
  • Ducks

In the rainy season , the Nata River fills the pans with shallow water. It is this shallow water that attracts flamingos and many other water loving birds to the Sanctuary.

Other animals also found at the sanctuary besides birds are...

  • Springbok
  • Foxes
  • Reedbuck
  • Zebra
  • Kudu
  • Monkeys
  • Eland
  • Jackals
  • Gemsbok

Best times to visit

Game viewing is best done form April to July. Bird watching is most suitable between January and March during the peak months of the rainy season.

Accommodation

There is a campsite near the entrance that is available for use and is very affordable.Hot showers and flush toiletsare included.

As an added bonus a braai area and a table are available for a true African night barbecue!!
